This is a great magazine for anyone interested in history, archaeology and/or the holy land. It is lively and topical in terms of current archaeological news in the middle east, and is a great source of history not only concerning the holy land, but Roman and Greek cultures as well. Plenty of site and artifact photos, along with news. Also, it is usually sprinkled with a little archaeological controversy or disagreement among the experts (making it a lively read). I think it is written with just the right detail to make it interesting and appealing to the laymen, while at the same time attracting readership from professionals/academics (as evidenced by the letters to the editor).
Also -- I have bought a couple of gift subscriptions for friends with no real archaeological background -- both of them loved it!

An Outstanding Publication January 30, 2010

I have been a subscriber to BAR off and on (mostly on) for about 25 years. This is an outstanding publication! It is written by scholars (for the most part; at least most of the writers are extremely well-informed in biblical archaeology) for non-scholars (like myself). However, some of the articles can get very deep and many average Bible students may be intimidated by this. The only thing that I can think of that even comes close to being a complaint against the publication is that it seems to be biased toward a minimalist approach to the Bible (i.e., that very little of the Bible records actual historical events). It is hard to fault BAR for this, however, because most scholars in the field today are minimalist.
